International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024-2033)

Fostering science for all

Our planet is headed towards global warming of more than 1.5°C by 2100, the target established by the Paris Agreement in 2015. Climate-change induced disruption is already wreaking havoc, as droughts, floods, storms, heatwaves and other weather-related hazards become more frequent and more severe. Despite the scale of the challenge, research output in vital areas for sustainability remains marginal.

The International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development aims at finding solutions to these global challenges. It recognizes science as a common good for humanity and reaffirms its fundamental role in humanity's quest for a development model that improves the human condition while preserving the planet on which our very survival depends. Led by UNESCO, the Decade's goal is to restore confidence in science, encourage critical and nuanced thinking, and strengthen worldwide scientific cooperation. By doing so, we are together paving the way for a more resilient, equitable and enlightened world.

About the Science Decade

Addressing urgent global challenges such as climate disruption, biodiversity loss, increasing natural and human-made disasters, and rising inequalities requires a more inclusive and interdisciplinary scientific approach to problem-solving.

On August 25, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly declared the years 2024-2033 as the “International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development.” This Decade offers a unique opportunity for humanity to fully harness the power of science in advancing sustainable development and securing a safe and prosperous future for everyone. UN Member States and all relevant stakeholders are urged to actively back the Decade, with UNESCO designated to lead its implementation.
